Neanderthal Musings

I am so, so late in posting! I admit it, I’ve been distracted elsewhere. Want to know where?

I saw you rolling your eyes. You don’t. But I’m going to tell you anyway.

(whisper) I’ve been on lynda.com.

It’s true. And it’s addictive. See, my husband bought me two stupendous presents for Christmas - Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2.0. They came packaged with Adobe Bridge, which I will go into for separate reasons. There was a little “free gift” I could choose for the purchase, so I looked at the books, the online printing, the trainings… what? Wait a minute. Trainings?

I’ve been chained (lovingly, but increasingly chained) to CS for the last 4 or 5 years. When I first opened up CS4, I felt a little like a Neanderthal in Manhattan.

Completely lost.

Trainings and tutorials sounded good. I made my choice.

When I opened those presents, I squealed for joy, and dh’s face lit up like our Christmas tree. But I didn’t know just how COOL these programs were, or I would have tackled him then and there, and well, ’nuff said.

Lynda.com has opened my eyes and my brain to the HUGE potential Lightroom and Bridge have for expanding my photography and making me a bit more professional. I still have that annoying blur to contend with, at least until I can replace my camera (shiver of anticipation)… someday. But in the meantime, life just got a lot simpler, a lot faster, and…

A lot more beautiful.

I know I’m practically Cro-Magnon in my professional expertise. But Adobe came out with some good design. Simple, efficient, powerful… I love it.

What kind of camera do you have now? I want to get a good camera that’s not super expensive but that works a lot better than the $150 one that I have. What would you recommend? I’m not anywhere near a good photographer, but I’d like to be able to take nice pictures and maybe someday get into photography.

Katie, I have the Canon Rebel XT. It was a great little camera to start off with and I learned how to use a DSLR and even, gasp!, how to use manual settings until it came naturally. I’m dying to upgrade, but I would totally suggest the Rebel XSi (the newer version, but still very entry-level). If you’ve been using a point and shoot, this camera will make you smile. It does have automatic settings, and you could just leave it at that, but if you’re looking to go further, it’s a great place to start.

Oh, by the way, I bought mine “used” (yeah right. There wasn’t a mark on it) from bhphotovideo.com. About $10-$20 more than ebay, maybe, but their customer service is awesome and their warranties are great. They won’t sell used cameras unless they are in prime condition. I wouldn’t hesitate to get one from them again.

Thanks! I think I know what I’ll ask for for my birthday/anniversary/mother’s day

  • [...] And just for fun, I’m having another (long) overdue giveaway.  Remember this? [...]
