Christmas Costumes

For Christmas, I made the girls and their cousins (also girls) a few costumes - hula girls, pirate hats, and crowns. They were pretty easy to make, once I got the hang of it. I wanted them to be perfect, so I went really slow, but now that I know what I’m doing, I think I could whip out a few sets in an afternoon and not take a whole week

First up, the pirate hat. Argh, matey!

There’s a matching eye patch around here someplace… oh well.

Just so you know, I am not the creator of these great little costumes. I got them straight out of a book from the library called “Super-Simple Creative Costumes.” I followed the directions - drew my patterns, cut them out, transferred it to double-sided heavy weight interface, cut out the interfacing, and then ironed the cloth onto the interfacing.
Here are the eyepatches after being ironed.

Then you cut them out…

…and finally satin stitch the edges and put the notions on. Easy, easy.

I used hot glue on the flowers to attach them to the skirt and the leis.

They were pretty easy, even for me.

Hula, hula!

Girls are so cute when they match! And when they’re happy about it.

The really neat thing about the pirate costumes was that I repurposed an old prom dress for it. I needed a lining for the Firebird costume I made my eldest at Halloween (see here). So I took apart an ugly red dress I had (complete with bad memories), and used the lining of the skirt for her jacket.
The unfinished jacket, with the black satin lining.

There was still plenty left over, so I used it for the black fabric on all 4 pirate hats and eye patches. And there’s still more.

I feel so virtuous when I can recycle something unused and unloved into something “new” and great. This was a really satisfying group of projects for me!
